Five Binghamton firefighters have been promoted.

A ceremony was held this afternoon at city hall to recognize them.

Sam Santoni is now an assistant chief. Daniel Vail and Timothy O'Neill are captains, and Patrick Shay and William Banovic have upgraded their status to lieutenants.

Assistant Chief Santoni has been with fire force for about 26 years.

"I look forward to this as a new challenge. I've been a leader for a lot of my career, as far as being in charge of people and personnel. I've been a captain for over 10 years. I look forward to the new challenge and a new career starting for me," said Santoni.

The promotions have come because of retirements within the department.
