Children in the city of Binghamton have been learning the game of golf this Summer.

First Tee is the first program of the Youth Success Initiative, a joint effort between the city of Binghamton and the Binghamton City School District.

About 800 elementary-aged kids have been participating through the district's Summer Fun program.

Mayor Rich david said First Tee exposes the game to students who might not otherwise have the opportunity.

"This really teaches them more about the game of golf. Teaches them about sportsmanship, working together, teamwork, perseverance, dedication, some really good values that will accompany them over the course of their lives. Also, it's a really great nice fun opportunity over the summertime," said David.

The Dick's Sporting Goods Open donated $5,000 to help fund First Tee.

Mayor David said an anonymous local contractor kicked in another $2,500 when he heard about the effort.
