A majority of them will be in the Twin Orchards section off Old Vestal Road, which badly flooded in September of 2011.
Town Supervisor John Schaffer was one of several people who personally appealed to Governor Cuomo to have the state cover the 25 percent of buyout costs that the federal government doesn't.
"It's a sad day for Vestal to see them go down, but we can bring some closure to these floods finally. We're happy the Governor stepped up and gave the extra 25 percent to help people out," said Schaffer.
All of the buyout homes in Vestal are expected to be down this spring. The Town of Union and City of Binghamton will also be tearing down homes in the near future. Once the properties are cleared they must stay forever green.
