A drilling rig caught fire at the Owego Elementary School construction site. The large piece of equipment was being used to drill for part of the new school's geothermal system that will be underground. The rig hit a pocket of natural gas and caught fire.

There was no report of injuries. The fire was contained to a small section of the site.

Owego Free Academy and Owego Middle School dismissed on time, although students were asked to leave the campus promptly. All after school activities were cancelled, although the boys varsity playoff basketball game is on.
