Binghamton (WIVT) - Returning Binghamton University students are arriving in tow this weekend and more than ever will be living in downtown Binghamton.

In an effort to familiarize them with what local businesses have to offer, CommuniKey is hosting its 3rd annual Downtown Student Kick-Off.

The free event features food, drink and other giveaways from 30 local vendors.

The celebration, taking place inside Terra Cotta on State Street and out back in the Parlor City Commons, is restricted to college students but includes those living on campus, off campus or attending SUNY Broome.

CommuniKey co-founder Dave Simel said there will be a DJ, a raffle and the event will be emceed by Joshua B of BingSpot.

"They're just giving you free stuff if you're a student. It's kind of unbelievable, they're like 'Wow, is this all for us?' We just want everyone to have a great time," said Simel.

The Downtown Student Kick-Off is co-sponsored by Twin River Commons and the City of Binghamton.

In addition to setting up fun, social events around town for both students and non-students, CommuniKey offers discounts to over 60 local businesses for a $1.99 a month.

It's also launched a new app to track participating businesses and to eventually replace its card for redeeming discounts.
