Dick's Sporting Goods hosts open house at new Conklin distribution center

CONKLIN, N.Y. - Dick's Sporting Goods is holding an open house at its new distribution center under construction in Conklin Saturday, and especially welcomes those who might like to work there.

The 650,000 square foot facility is scheduled to begin operations January 2.

But it's finished enough now to give a sneak peek to potential employees and anyone curious to see the inside.

The LEED Silver certified facility is full of special amenities including an employee locker room and fitness center as well as plenty of sports-themed furniture and designs.

Dick's plans to begin with 250 workers at the Northeast regional distribution center, which will supply Dick's stores from Maine to Virginia.

Senior VP of Supply Chain George Giacobbe says it's not just the proximity to nearby highways that makes the location ideal.

"It comes down to, and what's very important is the workforce. The quality and reliability. We spent a lot of time looking at that.  Conklin offered that. And it's our home town. It's where we started. You know, Dick's starting in 1948 in Binghamton, it's great to be able to bring this back home," said Giacobbe.

Dick's is already building an additional 250,000 square foot expansion that is expected to open in the first quarter of 2019.

The facility is expected to eventually employ over 500 people.

Saturday's open house runs from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m and will include food, spiedies, games, music, giveaways, and tours.

There will also be kiosks where applicants can submit their resumes in advance of Dick's first hiring event taking place in two weeks.

It's hiring processing associates, material handlers and specialized equipment operators.

Some positions are entry level with extensive training provided.

The distribution center is located at 1314 Conklin Road and has its own entrance separate from the Corporate Park.
