DA: Treasurer stole $250k from Vestal church destroyed by fire

VESTAL, N.Y. - The treasurer of the Vestal Church that suffered a devastating fire has been arrested for allegedly stealing a quarter of a million dollars from the parish.

Nathan Walz, 51, was arrested Thursday on grand larceny charges.

Walz is accused of writing checks totaling $250,000 from the bank account of Grace Lutheran Church located at 709 Main Street in Vestal to his personal account from 2012 to this month.

He served as Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer at Grace Lutheran.

In May 2015 the church caught on fire and was deemed a total loss.

They've since been building a new church.

He was arraigned last night in Vestal Town Court and was sent to Broome County Jail.
