Clive Thompson was the keynote speaker. He is a well-known technology writer who's written for the New York Times Magazine, Wired, Mother Jones and the Smithsonian. He is the author of Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds For The Better. Thompson also makes appearances on National Public Radio.
He has a positive view on the growing use of technology.
Originally, he was pessimistic about it, but he says new devices are going to help students achieve great things that haven't been possible in past generations.
"One of the great things with the internet is that it gives us connections not just to information but other people. We're able to broadcast our ideas, our assumptions, our hunches, our questions and find other people who are interested in exactly the same thing. This sort of reduces the intellectual isolation of everyday life and allows people to collaborate on amazing projects," said Thompson.
Before speaking this morning, Thompson had a book signing in the student center.
