Construction workers at Tioga Downs donate collected food to food bank

NICHOLS, N.Y. - Construction workers building improvements at Tioga Downs took a break to help feed hungry families in our area.

LP Ciminelli, the contracting firm building the hotel at Tioga Downs, held a food collection for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Workers gathered four containers full on non-perishable foods and also raised around $800 in cash.

Tioga Downs owner Jeff Gural matched the donation, bringing the total to $1,700

Food Bank Executive Director Natasha Thompson says the timing of the donation couldn't be better.

"Here in the Southern Tier, we have over 50-percent of school-aged children receiving free or reduced meals at school, or 41,000 kids. What happens in the summertime when those kids don't have access to meals at school? It pushes families living right on the edge to seek assistance," said Thompson.

Tioga Downs will also be holding a benefit concert for veterans.

On Saturday, July 1st, 38 Special will be performing at the casino with ticket sale proceeds benefiting the Southern Tier Veterans Support Group.
