Right beside Peacemaker's Stage, construction is underway to turn an historic former retail building into modern urban housing.

Chenango Place is a new development geared toward college students but open to anyone interested in living downtown. The 47 apartments are being built into the second, third and fourth floors of the former Fair Store along Wall Street in Binghamton. The fully-furnished apartments feature new appliances, views of the river and downtown and a private bath for nearly every bedroom. The development also boasts a fitness center, private study rooms, computer lab with free printing, game lounge, high security and access to the nearby city parking garage next to Boscov's.

Developers Ron Kutas and Ian Bel are recent B.U. grads. Kutas says he knows what students want and need.

"For the last seven years, I've been involved in Binghamton real estate. I love the city, I love the charm it has. I'd love to be part of bringing it back and making it a place where students want to stay after they're here in school," said Kutas.

Chenango Place will also lease two retail spaces on the first floor. Kutas says the project is scheduled to be finished by next August. He plans to start signing apartment leases and giving tours during B.U. parents weekend starting next Friday. For more information, go to
