Congresswoman Tenney facing backlash over Florida school shooting comments

TULLY, N.Y. - Congresswoman Claudia Tenney is facing backlash over comments she made surrounding the recent school shooting in Florida.

Wednesday, while a guest on Fred Dicker's Albany-based radio program 'Focus on the Capitol,' Tenney said, "It's interesting that so many of these people that commit the mass murders end up being Democrats, but the media doesn't talk about that either."

The comment received quick condemnation by state and national Democrats.

Thursday, while touring a paving company in Cortland County, Tenney refused to answer questions about the controversy, referring reporters to a statement she issued last night.

Reporter Andrew Donovan asked, "Can we talk about the comments yesterday?"

Tenney said, "No, we're not going to talk about it.  My statement stands.  Believe me, I'd love to talk about it and I will.  Let's get the news cycle going so Suit-Kote can get the credit, and their employees can get the credit for what they've done."

Donovan asked, "Do you regret what you said in the interview?"

Tenney said, "Not at all.  Don't regret it."

Tenney was at Suit-Kote in Tully to highlight the impact the recently enacted tax reform law has had on the 800 employee business.

Suit-Kote plans to retroactively give its workers a 2% pay raise and accelerate its contribution to employee 401K accounts.

See below for a statement from Congresswoman Claudia Tenney regarding her comments in an interview with Fred Dicker Wednesday:

"I am fed up with the media and liberals attempting to politicize tragedies and demonize law-abiding gun owners and conservative Americans every time there is a horrible tragedy. While we know the perpetrators of these atrocities have a wide variety of political views, my comments are in response to a question about the failure to prosecute illegal gun crime. I will continue to stand up for law-abiding citizens who are smeared by anti-gun liberal elitists," said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.
