One of the men planning to primary Republican Congressman Richard Hanna argues the heads of the Broome County Republican Party should be willing to listen to all candidates who want to run on the party line.

This past week, the Broome County Republican Executive Committee officially endorsed Congressman Hanna for his reelection bid. Michael Vasquez said he has tried more than 10 times over the past 10 months to get in touch with Broome GOP leadership, although his requests were ignored. Vasquez said Republican heads in other counties in the Congressional district are at least willing to listen.

"In the next few weeks, we're going to be sitting down with several of them and talking directly to members about carrying my petitions and making me known to their party members. The only real exception to that is, funny enough, Broome County, my home district," said Vasquez.

Next month, candidates can begin collecting petition signatures to get on the ballot. In a statement, the chair of the Broome County Republican Party Bijoy Datta said he was elected chairman in late September so he can't speak to the months before that. Datta claims the first time he heard directly from Vasquez was two nights ago. Datta said he did return the call and informed him that the executive committee is supporting Hanna.
