The Tioga County Memorial Park in Owego will soon be updated and include a monument to honor the four medal of honor recipients from the county. They are all from the Civil War.

Bill Chandler has been working to raise funds for the memorial park outside of the county courthouse. The Medal of Honor structure will have a four foot base and a three foot bronze statue on top of it. Chandler said it's only fitting that the brave servicemen who received the medals are finally publicly honored.

"The Medal of Honor, basically it's a person that does something above and beyond the call of duty, something extremely heroic that no one else may have done," said Chandler.

The medal of honor is the highest military award service members can earn.

There will also be new monuments installed to honor those who gave their lives in World War II that the county found out about after the original monument was installed. A modern warfare monument to recognize the ultimate sacrifice servicemen made in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will also be added.

A grand unveiling is planned for Memorial Day.

The memorial upgrade cost $30,000 and Chandler is still collecting donations to reach that goal. If you'd like to help out you can mail checks to:
