Celebration held for Newark Valley Special Olympics Gold Medalist

TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. - A Newark Valley man who recently represented the USA in the Special Olympics is bringing home gold.

A welcome home celebration was held Friday at Broome-Tioga BOCES for 21-year old John Williams.

Last week, he competed in the Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Austria, where he won a gold medal.

Williams competed in a number of cross country skiing events and won gold in the 4x1K relay.

Williams, who graduated from BOCES last year, received a standing ovation along with signs and cards of support from his friends.

He says winning gold was team effort.

"I was really happy to go over there. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Williams.

BOCES also presented Williams with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Williams qualified for the games and was chosen to compete in Austria from a lottery.

He's now qualified for another lottery to carry the torch for future Special Olympic games.

He says he will keep training, which includes lifting pallets and bales of hay.
