The fifth oldest zoo in the country, it opened in 1875.
It currently houses 200 species of animals and continues to grow every year.
The zoo keeps active in the community, visiting various places in its zoomobile and educating kids in the summer at zoo school. It also just launched a new fundraiser, the Gators on the Green golf tournament, this past weekend.
Rachel Davenport, director of special events and media relations, says that people should be expecting big things from the zoo this summer.
"We have our new animals which we have been announcing, we have the new red wolves along with the three baby otter pups and then we have a really big announcement coming up, probably next week that we are really excited for," said Davenport.
The zoo is officially open for the season, seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
