Binghamton University is turning to the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council for funds to create a Global Center Nexus of International Activities.

The new Global Center would be housed in the current Computer Center building.

B.U. is requesting $800,000 in state economic development money toward the overall cost of $4.8 million.

The center would house the international student services office, the university's language departments, and be a place to host international visitors. Last Fall, over 2,500 international students were enrolled at B.U.

B.U. President Harvey Stenger said the university needs additional space to accommodate the growing number.

"We think that will help maintain that growth of about 200 students per year which is a significant economic impact on the region," he said.

University officials say that if the state money is not approved, it will pursue a scaled-down version of the plan.
