Broome County Sheriff's Department honors officers

TOWN OF DICKINSON, N.Y. - Officers in the Broome County Sheriff's Department were honored for going above and beyond Wednesday night.

Over 20 officers in the corrections and law enforcement divisions were awarded Certificates of Recognition.

For corrections, officers were recognized for seizing drugs and contraband, stopping an inmate from assaulting an attorney and saving an inmate who was trying to hang himself.

For law enforcement, efforts included extinguishing a blaze before fire crews could arrive, performing life-saving CPR and taking drugs off the street.

Highway Division Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Dunham and his partner pulled over a driver with knives, a half ounce of methamphetamine and a loaded 9-millimeter handgun.

"A loaded gun will get you excited, just for officer safety purposes. It feels good to get drugs off the street. We know it's an epidemic right now, with heroin and methamphetamine. To get the higher quantities off the streets makes it feel like you're accomplishing something," said Dunham.

Members of the Broome County Special Investigations Task Force were honored for making over 900 arrests resulting in the seizure of over $100,000 in suspected drug money.

The could not be filmed in order to protect their identities.
