Broome County parks ready for summer season

WHITNEY POINT, N.Y. - Broome County is ready for Summer and all the special activities it brings to county parks.

County Executive Jason Garnar marked the announcement Wednesday with a canoe ride at Dorchester Park in Whitney Point.

Beginning Memorial Day weekend, Dorchester, Greenwood and Nathaniel Cole Parks will open their beaches, boat rentals and concession stands.

Pavilion rentals will be available and overnight camping begins this weekend at Greenwood.

As always, all county parks, including Otsiningo, Grippen, Aqua Terra and Hawkins Pond, are free to the public and open from 8 a.m. until dusk each day.

Garnar says the parks provide an important quality of life that attracts people to the area.

"You look at our parks, they're really the gem of our community. They're beautiful. There are a lot of different types of parks out there for different interests that people might have," said Garnar.

Garnar also announced a series of events at county parks this Summer, from large festivals like Spiedie Fest at Otsiningo to walks and runs to live music including the return of the Broome Bands Together concert series.

Plus, a new series of free family movies in the parks starting with a screening of Minions at Otsiningo on June 30th.
