Broome County launches program for businesses to make energy efficient upgrades

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Broome County is introducing an opportunity for businesses and non-profits to make energy efficient upgrades with no cost up front.

A launch event was held yesterday at the Holiday Inn Binghamton to educate business owners on the Property Assessed Clean Energy or PACE Finance Program.

It provides long-term, low-cost loans to local businesses and non-profits to add solar panels, insulation and other upgrades.

A NYSERDA advisor will evaluate a property and determine the cost for upgrades, covered by partnering lenders.

Southern Tier Solar Works Program Manager Adam Flint says the money employers save can be invested back into the business.

"If you're a non-profit or church, you want to direct more resources toward your mission. If you're a business, you want to be able to hire more people, buy more materials, invest in your business and spend less on energy bills. By deploying solar, we send a message that this is a 21st century community," said Flint.

The financing payments will be collected on the property owner's tax bill.

Flint says a number of local businesses have already expressed interest.
