Broome County announces funding for substance abuse programs

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Broome County is looking to fund youth programs aimed at our area's drug epidemic.

Last month, Garnar along with Parks, Recreation and Youth Services Director Matthew Gawors announced $190,000 in available funding to support youth programs in general.

On Monday, Garnar is extending the application process and is looking to fund $25,000 worth of initiatives that focus on drug education and prevention.

Garnar says getting to kids before they try drugs helps them stay away.

"Investing some money into prevention is worth a lot more than what the cure costs. Once people are addicted, there's treatment and all the other things that go along with helping someone. You're talking about tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars per person," said Garnar.

All applications can be filled out online on the County's website, GoBroomeCounty.com/parks.

The deadline to submit substance abuse programs is Friday, March 31st.
