A Binghamton Police Captain is challenging Sheriff David Harder to try to become the county's top cop.
Captain Christopher Bracco has been with the Binghamton Police Department for 20 years. 17 of those have been as a K9 handler.
He is a lieutenant with the Special Investigations Unit, a joint group of officers with the sheriff's office and Binghamton, and pioneered the Community Response Team for the city years ago.
Bracco says he has been on the front lines of the battle with crime. He says he'll concentrate on attacking the heroin epidemic, expand community policing and create new partnerships with schools to allow police to have more of an influence and presence in them.
"Not only am I an administrator who is tasked with administrative and operational tasks. I'm out there and see first hand how the crime, drugs and transiency have negatively exploited our area. There's a new wave of crime that's here. We cannot approach crime in the way we did 10 or 15 years ago," said Bracco.
Bracco is running on the Democratic line. He has been a Republican, but has filed the paperwork to change parties, although that officially won't happen until after the election, due to state law.
The Broome County Democratic Committee supports him.
