Chenango Valley graduate Nick Kushner is displaying his work at the JungleScience Gallery on Court Street starting tonight. Kushner uses an unusual medium to create these paintings: his own blood. He uses phlebotomy instruments like a butterfly needle to extract the blood. He claims that it handles much like water colors.
Kushner now lives in Los Angeles where his last show was rated number four on LA Weekly's top 10 events of 2011. He says it's not just about shock value.
"Art is something that should be powerful, something meaningful, to literally bleed for ones work to put ones self in it was at least for me the most meaningful way to approach my work," said Kushner.
The show titled Aceldama features 17 of Kushner's blood paintings. JungleScience will be open from 6 to 9 tonight for First Friday and the show will be up until April.
