Binghamton Zoo mourns loss of Chica, 28-year-old Andean bear

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park shared the unfortunate news on Thursday that their 28-year-old Andean bear, Chica, passed away.

The Zoo made the announcement on their Facebook page.

Their post reads:

The Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Andean bear, Chica. After monitoring her health for age-related decline and quality of life, the difficult decision was made to euthanize Chica earlier this week. At 28 years old, she was one of the oldest living Andean bears in the US population. Andean bears have a life expectancy of 20-25 years in the wild.

Chica had been a part of the Binghamton Zoo family since June 2010. She was here under the Species Survival Plan (SSP).

Chica’s long life is a testament to the exceptional care she has received by her caretakers over the years. She was a favorite among zookeepers. She will be remembered by staff for her incredible intelligence and sassy personality! Here is a photo from Chica's 28th birthday, where she received a special enrichment present.
