Binghamton Police hold ice cream social for local kids

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Police Department is celebrating summer vacation for kids by holding an ice cream social.

BPD teamed up with Mr. Softee to offer free ice cream for kids today at 266 Main Street in Binghamton.

Attendees were given free ice cream cones and other frozen treats as they chatted with members of the force.

One officer was encouraging kids to consult a teacher or an adult if a situation at school arises, instead of fighting.

Lieutenant Michael Senio says the event is a fun, light-hearted get together.

"It's a good community policing event. We want to go out and meet the kids and let them see that we're just like them. We're humans just like they are.  They get to meet an officer, shake their hands and get to know a little bit about them and their families. We talk to them about their interests and how their summer is going. It's a nice social event," said Senio.

The event is sponsored by Mayor Rich David and was also held last year.
