Binghamton Julyfest honors 90-year-old musician

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - 90-years-old and still going strong.

The Music and Jazz Festival at Julyfest honored guitarist Lou Francovillo Sr. Friday with a lifetime achievement award prior to performing on the M&T Bank stage.

He was joined by Larry Lolli on bass, Gene Cothran on keyboard, Joe Roma on drums and his son Lou Jr. on flugelhorn.

Lou Sr. has been playing guitar since he was 17.

While performing with local jazz bands, he played at numerous weddings, with the Bob Hope Show and shared the stage with the legendary Slam Stewart.

At one time, he played solo guitar three nights a week at a restaurant called The Vault in downtown Binghamton.

Lou credits his longevity to his wife, his family and music.

He says the challenge of guitar playing is what has kept him interested.

"You'll never master the instrument. They say it was designed by the devil because you can play and practice and play but you never achieve what you want to achieve. It's always trying to reach a little bit more," he said.

Julyfest continues this weekend on the streets of downtown Binghamton, with food and craft vendors and fine artists, many of them in the act of creating new pieces.

Also, there's a Kids ArtZone and Saturday morning, the 10th annual Parlor City 5K starts at 8:30 a.m.
