Mayor Rich David got behind a backhoe and took the first swing at 30 Pearne St. on the northside this morning.
David says the houses that are being demolished are in terrible shape and their removal will help improve neighborhoods.
The properties are owned by the city through the foreclosure process.
$160,000 of Community Development Block Grant money is being used for the removals.
"We want to demolish them, remove the blight and possible potential for criminal activity from these neighborhoods and help increase the property values and increase the integrity of the neighborhoods," said David.
David says the city will be working to redevelop some of the properties and is hoping that neighbors will want to acquire green spaces for others.
The other houses that are being torn down are on Liberty, Lydia, Oak, Way, Yager and Varick streets.
