A Republican challenger has stepped up to represent the 13th district on the Broome County Legislature.

Karl Bernhardsen announced his candidacy at Cafe West 46 on Seminary Avenue in Binghamton Monday morning. The district encompasses most of the city's westside and First Ward. Bernhardsen lives on the west side, graduated from Binghamton University and is the former director of Off Campus College Transport for B.U. He says his three areas of focus are on improving B.C. Transit, fighting blight and on reducing crime.

Karl Bernhardsen says "We used to call Binghamton and the surrounding area the valley of opportunity and a lot of people think that name doesn't really fit anymore. But, I think we do have opportunity, but it's a different type of opportunity, the opportunity to solve some problems, right? And, I'd like to be a big part in that."

The 13th district seat on the leg is currently held by Democrat Tony Fiala.
