"Bag O' Bones" at the Bundy

- Binghamton (WIVT) - Bag O' Bones is the latest incarnation of local musician Jeff Stachyra's ongoing exploration into the tragic demise of the SS Sultana.

The Sultana was a steamboat that sank just north of Memphis on the Mississippi River not long after the Civil War had ended.

The boat was overloaded more than six times the capacity with Union soldiers returning home from the war.

Stachyra first wrote a song, then a full-length concept album about the disaster.

Now, he's providing music and lyrics to a one-act musical written by local playwright Laura Cunningham and directed by Drew Kahl.

"They were Union soldiers just released from prison, they weren't in good physical condition, trying to swim in such a strong current. A lot of fatalities based on that. Well over 1,800 people perished in that which is more than on the Titanic," said Stachyra.

The group is staging a developmental read featuring six actors and three musicians at the Bundy Museum in Binghamton on Saturday, January 24 at 2 p.m.

The performance is free and the creators are seeking the audience's feedback as they continue to develop the play.
