Area police agencies to get new bullet proof vests

- Binghamton (WIVT) - Several police agencies around Greater Binghamton are getting new bullet proof vests thanks to help from the New York State Attorney General's Office.

NYS Attorney Eric Schneiderman made the announcement at Binghamton City Hall surrounded by police officers.

Schneiderman said the federal government used to provide financial assistance to police departments for the vests, but has dropped the ball in recent years as funding has gotten tied up in partisan gridlock.

Instead the AG's office is stepping in and covering half the cost of the vests.

The Binghamton P.D. will receive 26 of them, which equates to about $10,000.

"We are happy to provide these funds, which we are getting from joint federal investigations, so the funds come from assets seized from gangs. It's very appropriate that they are going to protect the law enforcement officers," said Schneiderman.

The Johnson City Police Department will receive about $1,100 to help buy four vests and the Endicott Police Department is getting nearly $2,800 to assist in paying for seven vests.
