50th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade a cold one for Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The golden anniversary of the Saint Patrick's Day Parade in Binghamton was a cold one.

The temperature failed to get out of the teens for the 50th Parade Day, and wind gusts made it feel even colder.

Parade organizers say that, as a result, crowds were down from their normal size.

The cold also kept many of the bands from playing their pipes throughout the procession.

The moisture of a bag piper's breath, combined with the cold, can cause the pipes to freeze and crack, so the pipers played only sparingly along the route.

However, those who braved the cold still seemed to enjoy themselves and were still able to collect some candy tossed their way.
