37th annual Strawberry Festival comes to Owego

OWEGO, N.Y. - Everything strawberry is back in Owego.

The Owego Marketplace hosts the 37th annual Strawberry Festival starting Friday.

There will be over 200 vendors selling food, drinks, and even arts and crafts many involving strawberries.

Popular items include strawberry shortcake, strawberry milkshakes and strawberry daiquiris.

There's even a chilled strawberry soup.

Pat Hansen is the owner of the Hand of Man gift shop.

She says the festival started off as a little sidewalk sale in 1981, and now it's a huge celebration.

"People look forward to it. Some people come from all over, they bring their families, they plan that special weekend to come here for the festival. It's really fun," said Hansen.

"I remember going to the Strawberry Festival with my mom. It was a very exciting time for me because I enjoyed all the people, and all the excitement. It was always really fun," said Katie's Kreations Employee Kristina Jackson.

Most downtown streets will be closed for the festival.

People are encouraged to park at Hickories Park, Marvin Park or the Tops parking lot and ride a shuttle into the village.

It costs $3 with proceeds going to the Boy Scouts.

The festival runs until 10 p.m. Friday night, finished off with a fireworks display.

It will pick back up early with street vendors, food, and lots and lots of strawberries Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the popular parade beginning at 10 a.m.
