St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino underwent season-ending back surgery Tuesday.
The Red Sox said Victorino had a procedure known as successful lumbar disectomy surgery. It was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins at Marina Del Rey Hospital in Los Angeles.
Victorino was placed on the disabled list last Friday with a lower back strain after two prior DL stints this season for a hamstring injury. He appeared in just 30 games this year and was batting .268 with a pair of homers, 12 runs batted in and 14 runs scored.
The Red Sox said Victorino is expected to be ready to return for spring training next year.
